Benchmarking Studies
Compare experiences using consistent tasks, participant criteria and measures so you can see where you stand and how performance changes over time.
Benchmarking studies
Benchmarking studies create comparable evidence across products, competitors or time using agreed tasks and metrics.
Consistency is the method: the same eligibility rules, tasks, success definitions and instruments allow fair comparison rather than anecdotal side-by-side judgement.
UX Pacific designs benchmarks that serve strategic questions — competitive position, release-to-release change or channel comparison — and reports results with the methodological limits made explicit.
What this method reveals
Relative performance across agreed tasks and measures
Where competitors or prior releases outperform
Stable strengths and recurring friction points
Direction of change when benchmarks are repeated
How we run it
Fixed task sets and success criteria across conditions
Matched sampling rules for fair comparison
Standardised facilitation or unmoderated protocols
Comparative reporting with statistical and practical context
When to research
When benchmarking is useful
Use benchmarking when leadership needs a comparable view of experience quality, when you must track change after major releases or when competitive position informs investment. It is less useful when the underlying tasks or audiences are too dissimilar to compare fairly.
The right participants
Comparable samples across conditions
Recruitment criteria stay constant across the products or periods compared. We screen for relevant experience without biasing toward power users of only one brand, and we document sample differences that still remain.
Our approach
How we run benchmarking research
-
01
Frame the decision
Agree comparison targets, success metrics and how results will influence priorities.
-
02
Lock the protocol
Define tasks, measures, facilitation rules and sampling so conditions stay comparable.
-
03
Prepare materials
Align environments, accounts and stimuli so differences reflect the experience, not logistics.
-
04
Run the benchmark
Collect performance and perception data under the fixed protocol.
-
05
Compare with care
Analyse differences, confidence and practical significance across conditions.
-
06
Translate findings into action
Identify where to close gaps and how to re-benchmark after change.
Comparability
Fair tests require fixed rules
We resist mid-study protocol changes that break comparability. When products evolve mid-field, we document deviations so year-on-year or competitive claims stay honest.
Research in context
Lab, remote and multi-market benchmarks
Format follows audience access and product type. Multi-market benchmarks account for language, devices and local service differences that affect task performance.
Research ethics
Transparent comparison without deception
Participants know they are completing research tasks. Competitive studies avoid misrepresentation of brands and handle data under the agreed confidentiality plan.
The output
What your team can receive
Outputs may include scorecards, task-level comparisons, trend charts, issue inventories and prioritised recommendations. We show both relative standing and absolute performance against the agreed success criteria.
Clear boundaries
Interpreting benchmark evidence
Benchmarks reflect defined tasks, samples and moments in time. They do not capture every journey or guarantee commercial outcomes. Small differences may not be practically meaningful; we help teams focus on gaps that warrant action.
Let us help shape the next step
